Our Roots

A Legacy of Land
& Gathering

The Grange movement was born after the Civil War to protect family farmers and build rural community. Hessel Grange carries that legacy forward in Sebastopol — the same soil, the same spirit, a new generation of neighbors.

Historic farmstead
1867
The Grange Is Founded
Oliver Hudson Kelley establishes the Patrons of Husbandry — the first national farm organization and first to give women full voice and vote, 60 years before universal suffrage.
1873
California Granges Take Root
The first California State Grange convention convenes with 104 granges represented. Sonoma County becomes fertile ground for the movement's ideals.
2008
Hessel Grange Rechartered
Beth Lewis and local Sebastopol residents restart the Hessel Grange — creating a community gathering place on Blank Road.

Hessel Grange #750 thrives as a grassroots center for farming families, community events, potlucks, yoga, music, grower exchanges, and celebration.
